Gmail-labels gets drag-and-drop feature.

Today when I logged into Gmail, noticed a pop up box (see below screen capture) guiding me to manage my labels. Now I can Drag messages into labels, likewise labels onto messages.I had 20+ labels and every day there are new mails which are not part of any of these labels. What this means is labels are not going to vanish, but getting more intelligent!

To get you started, Gmail put your most used labels on the left hand side, right below “inbox/Sent Mail/Drafts” and hid the labels you use the least. Alternatively, you can go into the Gmail Settings from the top, select labels to do the further management, where you can show and hide labels according to your wish.

Here is how you drag label onto the message.

I like this feature, as it brings more things “above fold” and enables high visibility of stuff like chat, google calendar, etc which includes only the very active labels. So Gmail labels are not going away, its better than folders concept when it comes to message categorization. Because, this way users can classify message into multiple categories with the help of “label” rather than moving the message in folders isolated from inbox and in some cases its away from mailbox itself. This new feature also warns that there won’t be any Right Side Label which was an experiment, but many people liked it including myself.
